Public Policy Chat with Commissioner Welch

Posted By Jillian Lusk, Friday, July 20, 2012

Yesterday, July 19, our Public Policy Council was fortunate enough to spend some time with Commissioner Welch in one of our Public Policy Chats.

It is clear that Commissioner Welch loves St. Petersburg and takes great passion in preserving our community. It is an interesting dynamic to balance what the city needs and what the county needs in a good harmony. One way that Welch believes we can accomplish this is more open dialogue and collaboration.

The group got an opportunity to discuss budgets, amendments, and county responsibilities at length. One issue that stood out in the conversation was supporting our homeless aid programs. Commissioner Welch spoke very passionately about his support Pinellas Hope and Safe Harbor and model facilities in our community. The impact they have made in several municipalities is hard to ignore. Although these programs require funding, the cost per day is significantly less than housing someone in our county jails.

The Chamber would like to offer our special thanks to Commissioner Welch for his time, and also a special thanks to St Pete College for allowing us a meeting space in your downtown campus.
