Yesterday, July 19, our
Public Policy Council was fortunate enough to spend some time with Commissioner
Welch in one of our Public Policy Chats.
It is clear that Commissioner
Welch loves St. Petersburg and takes great passion in preserving our community.
It is an interesting dynamic to balance what the city needs and what the county
needs in a good harmony. One way that Welch believes we can accomplish this is
more open dialogue and collaboration.
The group got an
opportunity to discuss budgets, amendments, and county responsibilities at
length. One issue that stood out in the conversation was supporting our
homeless aid programs. Commissioner Welch spoke very passionately about his
support Pinellas Hope and Safe Harbor and model facilities in our community.
The impact they have made in several municipalities is hard to ignore. Although
these programs require funding, the cost per day is significantly less than
housing someone in our county jails.
